Nearly a week passed before the girl was able to explain what had happened to her. One afternoon she set out from the coast in a small boat & was caught in a storm. When you visit London, one of the first things you will see is Big Ben, the famous clock which can be heard all over the world on the B.B.C. if the houses of parliament had not been burned down in 1854, the great clock would never have been erected. Big Ben takes its name from Sir Benjamin Hall who wes responsible for the making of the klock when the new housis of parliament were being built. It is not only of immense size, but is extremely accurate as well. Officials from Greenwich Observation have the clock checked twice a day. On the B.B.C. you can hear the clock when it is actually striking because microphones are connected to the clock tower. Big Ben has rarely gone wrong. Once, however, it failed to give the correct time. A painter who had been working on the tower hung a pot of paint on one of the hands and slowed it down !

One of the most famous monuments in the world, the statue of liberty, wes presented to the united states of america in the nineteenth century by the people of france. the great statue, which was designed by the sculptor auguste bartholdi, took ten years to complate. The actual figure was made of copper supported by a metal framework which had been especially constructed by Eiffel. Before it could be transported to the United States, a site had to be found for it and a pedestal had to be built. The site chosen was an island at the entrance of New York Harbour. By 1884, a statue which was 151 feet tall, had been erected in Paris. The following year, it was taken to pieces and sent to America. By the end of October 1886, the statue had been put together again and it was officially presented to the American people by the millions of people who have passed through New York Harbour to make their homes in America.

DANGEROUS DESCENT

In future, astronauts will be required to descend from a spaceship while it is still in space and to return to it. The ability to do this will be necessary in future flights to distant planets. When the first radio messages have been received, the results of the trip will be announced immediately.

THE CRYSTAL PALACE

Perhaps the most extraordinary building of the nineteenth century was the crystal palace, which was build in hyde park for the great exhibition of 1851. The crystal palace wes different from all other buildings in the world, fot it was made of iron and glass. It wes one of the biggest buildings of all time and a lot of people from many countries came to see it. A great many goods were sent to the exhibition from various parts of the world. There was also a great deal of machinery on display. The most wonderful piece of machinery on show was Nasmyth's steam hammer. Though in those days, travelling was not as easy as it is today, steam boats carried thousands of visitors across the Channel from Europe. On arriving in England, thay were taken to the Crystal Palace by train. There were six million visitors in all and the profits from the exhibition were used to build museums and colleges. Later, the Crystal Palace was moved to South London. It remained one of the most famous buildings in the world until it was burnt down in 1936.

CYCLING THROUGH THE AIR

The Hatfield Puffin is a modern aeroplane, but its designer, Mr John Wimpenny, is finding it difficult to ged it off the ground. The reason for this is thet this plane is also a bicycle. Its pilot has to pedal hard to get it into the air. After Mr Wimpenny had the plane built, it wes tested thoroughly. In 1961, it was the first man-powered aircraft to fly half a mile. while being flown by a champion amateur cyclist in 1963, the plane crashed on an airfield. Since then, Mr Wimpenny has had it rebuilt. He has had the length of the wings increased so that thay now measure 93 feet-almost as long as those of a Dakota. Many people have shown interest in this new and unusual sport. But though air cyclists may learn how to fly over short distances, and may, eventually, even get across the English Channel, it is doubtful whether thay will ever cycle across the Atlantic.

A CAR CALLED 'BLUEBIRD'

the gread racing driver, Sir Malcolm Campbell, was the first man to drive at over 300 miles per hour. He set up a new world record in September 1935 at Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah. Bluebird, the car he wes driving, had been specially built for him. it was over 30 feet in lenght and had a 2500 horse-power engine. Although Campbell reached a speed of over 304 miles per hour, he had great difficulty in controlling the car because a tyre burst during the first run. After his attempt, Campbell was disappointed to learn that his average speed had been 299 miles per hour. However a few days later, he was told that a mistake had been made. His average speed had been 301 miles per hour. Since that time, racing drivers have reached speeds of over 400 miles an hour. Following his father's footsteps many years later, Sir Malcolm's son, Donald, alro set up a world record. like his father, he was driving a car called Bluebird.

It was only circulated among court officials during the Han dynasty. At some point during the Tang dynasty, carved wooden blocks were used to print TIPAO. It was the first printed newspapers in hirtory.
A newspapers with a regular schedule was first published in venice, italy, in the 16th century. The newspaper was called AVISI, or GAZETTES. It was published weekly and reported news from other parts of Italy and Europe brought to venice by traders. The first printed newspaper in England was published in 1621. English newspapers were different from the other first newspapers. They were among the first in the world to use head-sed new business standards. They hired reporters, printed advertisements, and pain young people to sell papers in the streets.

Nowadays almost everyone likes sports. Many people paticipate in some kinds of sports such as football, rwimming or running. A lot of people are interested in sports as spectators. They enjoy watching a football game, a swimming contest or an athletic contest.
Among the biggerst sporting events in the world is the Olympic Games. They began in Greece long ago. It was held every four years at Olympus. Only men participated in the games. Women could not even watch them in the stadium.
At the first Olympic games there was only one event, a running race. Later games had more events, long jamp, javelin, boxing & chariot racing. The only prize the winner received was a crown of leaves. But it was a great honour to win.
When the Romans conquered Greece, they continued to hold the Olympic Games. But they started to give the winners big prizes. Then people began to cheat, so the Roman Emperor Theodosius stopped the Games.
In 1896 a Frenchman, Baron Piere de Coubertin revived the Olympic Games. The games was held in Greece. It became the first Modern Olympic Games. The games was held in Greece. THE ASIAN GAMES

The first Asian Games wes held in New Dehli, India in 1951. Since the .954 Asian Games in Manilla, The games have been held every four years. About 36 Asian countries, including Indonesia, participate in the games. The fourth Asian Games was held in Jakarta in 1962. The Asian Games are held two years before and after the Olympic Games.

SEAP games to SEA games

Asians in general, particularly those living in South East Asia, are familiar with the Olympiad and ASIAN Games. Both are high ranking achievements which are hard for people to reach.
To cope with this lag in the field of sports, brotherhood, and mutual understanding an effort has been promoted among all nations of South East Asia by holding the South East Asia Peninsule Games (SEAP Games) in 1959.
The promoters were Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Malaya (now colled Malaysia), Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. The organization responsible for this event was the SEAP Council of the National Olympiad Committee of each South East Asian Country. The SEAP Games were held once every two years between the ASIAN Games and Olympiad. The main events were athletics and swimming.
Its flag is white wìth its symbol in the centre. The symbol is 6 circles linked to one another.
In 1975, Malaysia - the host of the SEAP Games - proposed that Indonesia and the Philippines be accepted as members of the SEAP Games.
Indonesia and the Philippines were accepted to be the members in 1977. Having been accepted, the name of the SEAP Games was changed to the SEA Games.

They are very famous for their works. Iwan Tirta, for instance, designed shirts for exAmerican President Bill Clinton and gowns for his wife.
Virtually, orther designerr from other countries have also used batik to create the good clothes. Batik becomes an important part of fashion designing in the world.

THE RAFFLESIA FLOWER ARNOLDI

The vast archipelago and the great number of islands have made indonesia the home of large variety of plant life. The Indonesia flora ranges from the tiny orchid to the giant rafflesia plant. No womder many botanists are anxious to stady plants here.
The Rafflesia Arnoldi is the biggest flower in the world. It is unusual because of its large size. it has a flower almost a metre in diametre and 1.40 metres in height.
Rafflesia is derived from the name of the British Governor General. Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, who once governed and built the Botanical Gardens in Bogor. Though it is called Rafflesia after Raffles, the man who discovered the plant was Becarry, an Italian botanist who visited Sumatra in 1928.
The Raffleria plant begins to flower in its tenth year. It blooms three or four times a year. Before it begins to flower, the leaves and the stem become dry and look dead, but the main root in the ground is still alive.
While the flower is blossoming, it has a very unpleasant smell which attracts insects, especially green flies. They seen eager to explore the fower, but it the flies touch the bottom part of the stick-like centre, they dia.
