OUT OF THE DARKNEES

Nearly a week passed before the girl was able to explain what had happened to her. One afternoon she set out from the coast in a small boat & was caught in a storm. Towards evening, the boat struck a rock & the girl jumped into the sea. Then she swam to the shore after spending the whole night in the water. During that time she covered a distance of eight miles. Early next morning, she saw a light ahead. She knew she was near the shore because the light was high up on the cliffs. On arriving at the shore, the girl struggled up the cliff towards the light she had seen. That was all she remembered. When she woke up a day later, she found herself in hospital.

A FAMOUS CLOCK

When you visit London, one of the first things you will see is Big Ben, the famous clock which can be heard all over the world on the B.B.C. if the houses of parliament had not been burned down in 1854, the great clock would never have been erected. Big Ben takes its name from Sir Benjamin Hall who wes responsible for the making of the klock when the new housis of parliament were being built. It is not only of immense size, but is extremely accurate as well. Officials from Greenwich Observation have the clock checked twice a day. On the B.B.C. you can hear the clock when it is actually striking because microphones are connected to the clock tower. Big Ben has rarely gone wrong. Once, however, it failed to give the correct time. A painter who had been working on the tower hung a pot of paint on one of the hands and slowed it down !
